The “May 1st Factory” was an example of the transition of a home-based handicraft to a new form of organization. It was not just a type of co-operative integrating the knitters; it involved a division of labour which organized them according to their differing abilities. In the end, a greater operational efficiency was achieved. The knitters realised that their industry need to be improved and transformed. The knitters’ state of mind also changed, for they became members of production collectivization. The new enterprise was an intermediate link between home industry and mechanized production. Yet, handwork remained the basis of all the aspects of the production of these shawls. Here is a description of the “May 1st Factory” by the writer Alexander Peregudin, who visited Orenburg in 1930: “On the first floor of a big brickwork building is the combing shop. At long tables there sit girls and women, among them many Asians with dark hair, swarthy faces and olive-like eyes. The broad windows let in much light. The walls are covered with posters, the biggest one of which blares in big letters: ‘Let’s transform the places of the opiate of the masses into cultural oases! 1 “The women concentrate on their work in silence; only one Tatar woman hums an oriental tune – a jaunty, bouncy, Фабрика им. Вот как описывал «Фабрику Первого Мая» писатель Александр Перегудин, побывавший в Оренбурге в 1930 году: «На втором этаже большого кирпичного корпуса – чесальный цех. За длинными столами сидят девушки и женщины, среди них много нацменок, темноволосых, со смуглыми лицами, с глазами, как маслины. В широкие окна льется много све- та. Руки привычно и быстро рас- чесывают пух. Кирдяшева берет со стола комок пуха. – Вот это после первого прочеса. Выборка волоса из пуха и его прочес производятся вручную. Пухоотбороч- ных машин в СССР нет. За границей такие машины по- явились. Промкредитсоюз хочет такую машину для нас приобрести. Это было бы очень хорошо! Машинизиро- вать наше производство необходимо, без этого далеко не уйдем… В пухочесальном коллективе по 10-15, а в прядиль- ном по 5-10 человек. В прядильном цехе большинство работниц в красных платках, – на сером фоне стен и сто- лов их головы похожи на маки. На коленях женщин и де- вушек лежат чайные блюдечки, донышки от стаканов, на них пляшут и тихо поют однообразную свою песню вере- тена. Ловкими, почти незаметными движениями пальцев правой руки кустарка крутит веретено, а из куфты (куде- ли) в левой руке набегает на него пуховая нитка. It is necessary to mechanize our industry, or else we shall lag behind…” The writer further observed, “The combing team consists of 10-15 women and the spinning team, 5–10 women. Most of the women in the spinning shop wear red kerchiefs – their heads look like bobbing poppies against the grey background of the walls and tables. On the laps of women and girls, lie saucers or the bottoms of glasses, whereon drop spindles dance and sing their low monotonous song. The craftswomen make their spindles rotate with deft, almost imperceptible movements of the fingers of their right hands. And, from the rolag of down in their left hands runs the new downy yarn onto their spindles. “At the windows, other craftswomen ply yarn onto the yarn swifts, then twist them onto the spinning wheels”. 54 55 56 57 58 59 60 61 62 63
