And here, too, Peregudin writes that comrade Kirdiasheva dreams of mechanization, “There are spinning machines in the USSR. We shall get them sooner or later. Until then, we will work manually”. The visitor continued to describe the works, “In the corner, there is a down knitting machine. It is operated in three shifts by girls who have risen in the “ranks”. The machine knits the centres of shawls. It is rated capable of producing eight shawls in an eight-hour shift”. Peregudin quotes the director of the factory when she explained, “We got the machine recently. It is operated by apprentice girls and they produce only 12 shawls in 24 hours. That is only half of the machine’s capacity. Still, the other shops cannot keep up with the machine – they lag behind in combing down and in preparing yarn. The shawl edgings are knitted separately by hand – both here in the common shop and at the women’s homes. The edgings are then attached to the centres”. The writer added, “Completed shawls are delivered to the finishing shop. Here women “put shawls on thread”, that is thread a cord through the ends of every point of the edging on each shawl. They then spatter each shawl with water and then shake them. Each is then blocked (stretch it on a wooden frame) for two days. This is the last stage of the factory production of shawls. After that, the shawls are sorted, stacked in hundreds and stored. “The finishing shop is located in a recently constructed stone building, which also houses the dye works that dyes the goat down for the whole Orenburg district. The new building is spacious, full of light, clean, and steam-heated”. 64 65 66 67 68 69 67 71 72 73 Продукция пуховязальных артелей / Products of down-knitting co-operatives Активисты Союза промысловой кооперации. 1930-е годы / Activists of the Industrial Co-operation Union 1930s
