Оренбургский пуховый платок

All visitors to Orenburg are sure to go to the market place. There are so many specialty local goods: salted water-melons, juicy meaty tomatoes, honey-tasting tchak-tchak, buckwheat honey. The main products that attract visitors to themarket square, however, are the Orenburg downy shawls. Women sell them standing outside the market fence – around thirty in all. They are Tatars and Bashkirs, but mostly Russians. In the late 90s, as private business developed after the disintegration of the Soviet Union, knitters went to see the Mayor (then G. Donkovtsev) and asked not to be pushed out of the market with the others who had no vendor’s permits. Only for the knitters was an exception made: “You did trade, you are trading and you always will!” Their profit – some 100-300 roubles on one shawl – is small money, even if they are only resellers. No one would get rich on that; they are not in competition with anyone. “You want to trade? Come and sell.” There are downy shawl vendors at the market – all women – all day long. Some of them come in the morning, others in the afternoon. If a shawl must be sold that day by any means – well, the vendors will stay to the bitter end waiting for a buyer to turn up. Someone buys, without flinching, the most expensive shawl. Some haggle for a long time. Who needs what kind of shawl is seen right away. Whether this person understands something about the thing being bought is clear, too. The vendors have a sharp eye. Visitors do not leave the vendors’ rows without a shawl. For those who intend to go abroad, this is an obligatory present! Soldiers, when demobbed, often buy that downy miracle of Orenburg for their mums. They haven’t got much money, but the saleswomen are sure to find something affordable for them. There are also ex-convicts, easily identified; they buy some shawl for wife or mother. Nothing but a shawl! Probably, somewhere on a genetic level in our ancestral memory, we Russians have a feeling that a shawl is a symbol of maternal love and compassion. If someone comes to purchase a shawl – he won’t go back without one! Of course, it depends on the amount of money the purchaser has to spend and the quality sought. Every shawl, even a used one, will find its buyer. For example, the market women who stand in outdoor stalls in the heavy frosts of deep winter and downpours come and ask for any shawl, be it even the lowliest sort. They need it not for beauty, not to show off, but to tie around their waists or to spread on a stool. They are prepared to buy even a shoddy one. Should you want one to cover your neck under a fur coat or to wrap around yourself when relaxing in an arm-chair – the size will be found. Женщины, торгующие платками, стоят за оградой рынка. Их человек 30, не больше. Есть среди них татарки, башкирки, но больше русских. В конце 90-х годов, в период становления частного предприниматель- ства после распада СССР, платочницы ходили к мэру, тогда Геннадию Дон- ковцеву, просили, чтобы не выгоняли с рынка их, не имеющих никаких лицензий. Только им было сделано исключение: «Торговали, торгуете и торговать будете!» Их прибыль – 100 – 300 рублей с платка – мизерные деньги. Даже если они перекупщики. На этом не разживешься. Они нико- му не составляют конкуренции. Хочешь продать – приходи и продавай. Стоят продавщицы на рынке целый день. Одни приходит с утра, другие после обеда. Если нужно продать платок сегодня – будут стоять до конца, покупатель обязательно появится. Кто-то покупает, не глядя, самый доро- гой платок. Кто-то долго торгуется. Кому какой платок надо – видно сразу, и понимает ли человек, что покупает, – тоже. Глаз у продавщиц наметанный. Приезжие без платка от рядов не отходят. За границу кто едет – это обязательный подарок! Солдаты после службы часто покупают матери оренбургское пуховое чудо. Денег особо нет, но им обязательно что-ни- будь подберут. Есть и мужчины после заключения, их сразу видно, и они берут платочек матери или жене. Именно платок! Видимо где-то на гене- тическом уровне, на уровне нашей родовой памяти есть ощущение, что платок – это символ материнской любви и сострадания. Если кто-то приходит купить платок – он его обязательно купит! По де- ньгам, по качеству. Любой, даже ношенный, дождется своего покупателя. Например, продавщицы на рынке, стоящие в палатках в мороз и в дождь, приходят и спрашивают хоть какой завалящий платок. Нужен он не для красоты, не на показ, а чтобы на поясницу завязать или на табурет поло- жить – готовы взять и некондиционный, лишь бы подешевле.
