Пух при прядении вытягивался в тончайшую нить, подобную паутине. Овечья шерсть, лен, коноп- ля никогда не были столь податливы и нежны при традиционной обработке. Зародившееся в качестве источника допол- нительного заработка занятие оказалось на- столько выгодным и востребованным, что во многих поселениях вязание пуховых платков становилось зачастую единственным источни- ком дохода. Ведь из года в год женское насе- ление казачьих станиц превышало мужское и большей частью вязальщицы были казачьими вдовами, чей средний возраст составлял 30-35 лет. Длинными зимними вечерами они обраща- лись к спицам и пуховой нити, чтобы кормить- поить себя и своих детей, не допуская нищеты. Опыт первых мастериц пуховязания переда- вался и оттачивался от поколения к поколению, шел процесс накопления и совершенствования ремесленно-технических навыков, приемов об- работки пуха и вязания. В результате коллек- тивного опыта сложилась художественная сис- тема промысла, и оренбургский пуховый платок стал таким, каким мы его знаем. The unique fineness of the local goats’ down hair prompted the women to create a light, warm garment. This became a necessary item in ladies’ clothing. The goats’ down is spun into yarns similar to and as fine as cobweb. Sheep’s wool, flax, or hemp never produce yarns so soft or pliable with traditional processing. This handiwork, which arose as a source of additional income, turned out to be very profitable and its products so much in demand that in many settlements knitting downy shawls grew to become the only way to earn a livelihood. As a point of interest, there were more women than men in the Cossack stanitsas and most of the knitters were Cossack widows aged on the average 30-35. On long winter evenings, they took up knitting needles and down-hair yarn to support themselves and their children and thereby avoided falling into abject circumstances. The experience of the first masters of down- hair knitting was passed on and perfected over the generations. This led to an accumulation of and pinpointing of handicraft techniques, the best ways to treat the down, and best ways to knit the shawls. As a result of this shared expertise, the artistry of this handicraft built up and the Orenburg shawl became what we know it to be today.
