In 2011, the factory regained its original name: the “ORENBURG DOWNY SHAWL FACTORY”. For the factory, its downy knitted goods and shawls have always been its best “business card”, a way to present and spotlight the high quality of the manufactured downy goods produced by the factory. This means that it was the downy shawl that did the PR for the company and for the full range of its manufactured goods. Unfortunately, as no historical records were kept of all the samples of shawls and cobwebs ever knitted at the factory, the current product line may not reflect the full capacity of the company. In 1958, the “Paris Commune Artel” produced only four kinds of downy shawls; however, in 1980, the product line boasted twenty nine shawls, tippets and scarves. The absence of these records is due in part to the fact that the previous plan-based economic organization focused only on numbers and profitability. It’s a great pity that we cannot now draw on any records to expand and develop our product line. It would have been very interesting to have been able to do so not only to expand the company’s product line, but also for the historical information it would provide on the expertise available to the company from its most precious resource, the very knitters who created these marvellous items to begin with. While, initially, machines were only used for the less important processes used in making a downy shawl, it did become possible to knit shawls almost entirely by machine. It is noteworthy that today most traditional types of Orenburg hand knitting can be accurately reproduced by machine. It is time to address the issue of the establishment of the new aesthetics of the machine down-knitting Практически мы можем говорить о воз- никновении эстетики машинного пуховязания, ос- нованного на традициях оренбургского промысла, но получившего новое техническое воплощение. craft, one which is based on the centuries-old traditions of this Orenburg artistic handicraft.
